General Questions

PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies.

PFLAG is for LGBTQ+ people; their parents, families, and friends; allies; and anyone seeking to understand and support the community.

PFLAG's three purposes are support, education, and advocacy. Read the following sections for more information about each.

One of the most valuable benefits of involvement with PFLAG is getting to know other people and families in situations similar to yours. Being able to listen to and learn from someone who is on a similar path, but farther along, is incredibly affirming.

PFLAG National has a vast trove of educational content available, from booklets (available for free download in our shop and on the resources page) to videos, including a weekly live broadcast, Something To Talk About. Click for access both to the Thursday afternoon live show and the archive of past episodes. These can be easily shared with anyone seeking to learn.

If you're interested in advocacy, one benefit of becoming a PFLAG member is that PFLAG National will email action alerts relevant to the zip code with which you register. Our local chapter also provides opportunities to get involved, such as in 2020 when we successfully fought to repeal Greenville County Council's anti-gay resolution.

Meeting Questions

No, paid membership is not required to attend a PFLAG meeting.

Yes! Children under the age of 18 are welcome at our meetings but must be accompanied by their parent/guardian.

Most of our meetings are general support. At these meetings there will be a welcome from one of the board members, followed by brief introductions from all attendees who wish to share (you are not required to do so). Then the floor is opened for topics of discussion. Sometimes we have a guest speaker, and there will be less time for general discussion.

Yes, we expect everyone who attends a meeting to respect the privacy of other attendees. We conclude every meeting with this quote our co-founder Carole Lender used to recite: "What is seen here, what is said here, when you leave here, let it stay here."

For most of our chapter's almost-30-year history, we've met at the Red Cross building, but they temporarily closed during the pandemic. We have sought out other locations in the meantime, most recently, the new Queer Wellness Center.

We have resumed in-person meetings for the most part, and are also offering a hybrid Zoom component. So if you're not able to or not comfortable attending in person, you can still be with us via Zoom.
